What Causes Tooth Discoloration?

Tooth discoloration is a perfectly normal occurrence. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including, but not limited to:

  • Genetics: Not all teeth are the same! People are born with teeth of a wide variety of shades.
  • Age: There is a direct correlation between tooth color and age. As you age, teeth darken as a result of natural wear & tear & stain accumulation. This is normal.
  • Eating Habits: Coffee, wine, soda, tea, & other acidic & deeply colored beverages and foods can contribute to staining over time.
Smoking Habits: Nicotine and tar from smoking can leave small deposits in the tooth structure to cause discoloration.
  • Drugs/Chemicals: Certain drugs and chemicals can affect the tooth structure
  • Grinding: Teeth grinding can wear down the enamel and add to micro-cracking in teeth.
  • Trauma: Falls and other related injuries can produce cracks & chips that are more susceptible to staining.

How Does Teeth Whitening Work?

Significant color change in a short period of time is the major benefit of in-office whitening. This protocol involves the carefully controlled use of a relatively high-concentration peroxide gel, applied to the teeth by the dentist or trained technician after the gums have been protected with a paint-on rubber dam. Generally, the peroxide remains on the teeth for several 15 to 20 minute intervals that add up to an hour (at most). Those with particularly stubborn staining may be advised to return for one or more additional bleaching sessions, or may be asked to continue with a home-use system.

How White Will My Teeth Get?

Results vary on a case by case basis. We generally use shade guides to help indicate where your teeth are on the color spectrum and help you get to where you want to go. In most cases it will require several treatments to address the various factors that may contribute to the current shade. We will get you there!

Does it Hurt?

You may experience some mild sensitivity and gum irritation, but it should only last for a day or two. Our trained professionals only use the safest of materials to ensure the procedure is as comfortable as possible.
